Amy Rose Photography will be offering a presentation on portrait photography. This is a great opportunity to hear from one of our area’s best photographers. The event is free and open to the public. Thanks to the University of Iowa Photography Club for hosting and arranging the meeting.

  • The path she took to become a professional photographer.
  • The difference of doing photography as an art vs business.
  • How to run a successful business and provide valuable insider information.
  • Posing, lighting, and various portrait techniques.

Afterwards, she has offered to to talk to members about anything such as: gear, image critique, business set-up, industry insider info, individual shooting lessons, etc.

  • Commercial Shoot, Wednesday, November 6, early morning, location is North Liberty
  • Wedding, Saturday, November 9, all day (about 10 to 12 hours long), location is Iowa City and Wellman

Seeking Photographers for the Wilderness Medicine Race on 2 February 2013

Date. 2 February 2013

Time. The race starts at 9:30 AM, but one can be out at the course by 8:15 AM, and ends unofficially at 2 PM.

Location. Macbride Nature Recreation Area. Once inside the park, follow the main road until you see a sign for the Social Center pointing towards a right fork. You will also see a sign for the “Wilderness Medicine Race.” Take the right fork and park on the side of the road before the dead end.

Event Summary. Photographers are wanted for the following event.

About 75 students and physicians of the Wilderness Medicine Interest Group are are putting on a Wilderness Medicine Race.

The race is focuses on the practice of medicine and emergency care outside of the conventional clinic. (WMIG orgsync page)

The Wilderness Race pits 8 teams against the clock as they complete a 5K course that includes 8 interspersed stations of relevant outdoor medical emergencies. Examples include recreational accidents or more serious scenarios, like a lightening strike or hunting accident.

The event is outdoors at the Lake Macbride Nature and Recreation Area and the course is somewhat challenging as it covers wooded trails and the rocky shoreline.

The group will post photos on their OrgSync page. Please do let me know if you are interested to help Peter to take photos.

Clothing. The course is over some rough terrain so dress appropriately for a day out on your feet in the cold.

Schedule.  The race goes chronologically between all 8 stations (circled).

  • 8:15 AM – Volunteers show up.
  • 9:15 AM – Team registration begins.
  • 9:30 AM – Heat 1 “on deck”
  • 9:40 AM – Heat 1 — 2 teams enter course
  • 9:50 AM – Heat 2 “on deck”
  • 10:00 AM – Heat 2 — 2 teams enter course
  • 10:10 AM – Heat 3 “on deck”
  • 10:20 AM – Heat 3 –2 teams enter course
  • 10:30 AM – Heat 4 “on deck”
  • 10:40 AM – Heat 4 — 2 teams enter course
  • 2:00 PM – Race ends

Directions

The following directions are provided by Iowa Wilderness Medicine.

Directions from Iowa City:

  • Take Dubuque St. across the interstate and into North Liberty.
    • You will pass through some country neighborhoods on your way; the North Liberty water tower best marks the town.
  • In North Liberty turn Right on to Front St. (A chiropractic clinic is on the corner).
  • Follow Front St. out of town. Front St. will turn into Mehaffey Bridge Rd. NE
  • Once you cross the bridge over the Coralville Reservoir, take your 2nd left into the Macbride Nature Recreation Area.
    • The entrance will be just around the curve after the bridge, so don’t miss it!
    • Two short brick walls on either side of the road and a small sign mark the entrance.
  • Once inside the park, follow the main road until you see a sign for the Social Center pointing towards a right fork. You will also see a sign for the “Wilderness Medicine Race.” Take the right fork and park on the side of the road before the dead end.

From Iowa City:

  • Follow Front St. out of town. Front St. will turn into Mehaffey Bridge Rd. NE

From the East: 

  • Take I-80 to the Dubuque St. Exit (Exit 244)
  • Follow Dubuque St. into North Liberty.
  • In North Liberty turn Right on to Front St. (Frog Hollow Day Care is on the corner).
  • Follow Front St. out of town. Front St. will turn into Mehaffey Bridge Rd. NE
  • After you cross the bridge over the Coralville Reservoir take your 2nd left into the Macbride Nature Recreation Area.

From I-380/Hwy 218: 

  • Take I-380 to the Penn St./County Rd. F28 Exit (Exit 4)
  • Head east on Penn St. /County Rd. F28 to Front St.
  • Turn Left onto Front St.
  • Follow Front St. out of town. Front St. will turn into Mehaffey Bridge Rd. NE
  • After you cross the bridge over the Coralville Reservoir take your 2nd left into the Macbride Nature Recreation Area.

Iowa City Photographers Gathering

About. All Iowa City Photographers are invited to this informal gathering of local photographers both professional and hobby enthusiasts.

Date/Time: 8 March 2012 from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM

Location. Prairie Lights – upstairs coffee shop cafe. If the group is too large, we’ll find another venue.

Register. Signup for the upcoming Iowa City Photographers Gathering at Prairie Lights Bookstore.
